web design tools

There are two main categories of tools for creating and/or maintaining your website. One category offers the ability to edit via a web browser, the other via tools that you install on your local PC or Mac to edit and then upload the files to the web.

Browser Tools

Google Sites: Google just released (2/28/2008) a browser based site creation tool. For beginners, it is a great tool to get a website up very easily.

Client Tools

Contribute 3 is a Macromedia product that is one of the more robust consumer based tools to create and maintain websites with. You can try a 30 day trial version. The purchase price is $149 retail.

Nvu (pronounced N-view) is a complete Web Authoring System for Linux desktop users as well as Microsoft Windows and Macintosh users to rival programs like FrontPage and Dreamweaver. As an Open Source project, there are no user fees. It is a very robust tool and does a fabulous job, even for beginners!

Kompozer is the replacement for Nvu that is being updated with new releases.

Rage WebDesign is a Mac only web design tool that is fully expandable and has many add-ons and enhancements available. At $29.95, it is a great deal as well!

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the website address that you will reference people to go to. Domain names are reserved thorugh services that manage domain names. Thunder Star does not offer a direct domain name signup, but recommends several on our hosting site.

What exactly is web hosting?

Web hosting is a service that allows you to rent a space on a server that is maintained by someone else. The server is connected to the internet and allows people to then find your webiste on the internet.

How does the domain name point to the web hosting?

Once you have signed up for a domain name and for web hosting, there is a simple setting associated with the domain that is updated and then it points to your space on the web hosting server.

What are the steps I should take in setting up a website.

  1. Reserve a domain name. We prefer GoDaddy.
  2. Sign Up For a Hosting Service!
  3. Update the domain name to point to the web hosting.
  4. Pick a tool to use to design your website. See Tools above.
  5. Plan your overall layout.
  6. Build your page and publish it!
  7. Send an email out to all your friends announcing it.
  8. Promote your site with the major search engines. The best promotion is to update your site frequently!
